Jim's professional career began in the civil engineering field, where he worked on a wide range of projects that contributed to Metro-Atlanta's growth and development in the 80's. He's always had an inherent sense for design, leading to his first love, home furniture, color and fabric. Having grown up in the home furnishings industry, he longed to return to his roots.

At the suggestion of a long-time friend, Jim began a custom blind business, which skyrocketed. Jim enjoyed consulting with homeowners, solving their window treatment needs; however, he couldn't help but notice - the homes were basically empty.

His entrepreneurial nature took over and he consulted with homeowners regarding their furnishing needs. It boiled down to unique, affordable pieces that couldn't be found in the Atlanta market.

Jim began by offering furniture options through catalog purchase.

When Jim moved to Alpharetta in 1989 and sought to furnish his new home, he experienced the challenges firsthand. He needed quality, high end furniture and simply could not find it. He knew he could do much better than anyone else in the market.

Jim opened the first location in 1990, Home Design Center. The original location was built in a grocery store building that once housed a pool hall, barbecue restaurant, retail stores and a dry cleaner.

The idea was to provide customers with options for the unique look they desired, not a typical "run-of-the-mill", generic furniture store. He took the concept a step further by offering high end furniture up to 40% off MSRP, free interior design services and consultations.

A wish to become his own landlord and expand the business inspired Jim to take advantage of a severely depressed real estate market. In 2011, Jim purchased the former home of John Deere Tractors and transformed two buildings into a 27,000 square foot showroom and warehouse.
